Breakaway ASUU faction, CONUA tells FG the Union is ready to resume work Lecturers under the aegis of Congress of University Academics (CONUA) have asked the Federal Government to reopen tertiary institutions in the country as its members are ready to resume work. The group, a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities made this call in a press statement on Wednesday after its National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja. The statement, which was signed by CONUA’s National Coordinator, Niyi Sunmonu, was titled ‘Stop intimidation of CONUA members’. The lecturers however added that everything necessary in terms of COVID-19 protocols must be put in place before reopening the universities in order to prevent students and staff from contracting the disease. Students fault ASUU on 2021 resumption date Many students have expressed disappointment over the statement by the President of the Academic Staff Union of the Universities (ASUU), Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, that the Federal Government should not reopen schools until it is safe for students. They also faulted Ogunyemi’s claim that university students would not resume even after the COVID-19 pandemic until the Federal Government met certain conditions. They claimed ASUU was just fighting for its own selfish interest. Nigerian Student Allegedly Dies while Making Soap in Ibadan A 300-level student of the Department of European Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan identified as Gbadebo Richard, has reportedly died on Tuesday July 28 in a soap-making factory, in Ibadan. It was reported that, the student was on a night shift when he fell into one of the machines at the Oluyole factory of Henkel Nigeria Limited, producers of WAW detergent and soap. His colleagues were reportedly unaware of the accident until they saw blood on one end of the machine. The company management however, did not inform the deceased family of the incident until an unknown person called to inform them. This sparked public outraged, people were mobilized to blocked the road leading to the factory. The deceased father was later allowed into the building and went with the body, packed in a plastic bag to the morgue.

NABTEB Timetable for 2020 May/June NBC/NTC Examinations National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) Timetable for the 2020 May/June National Business Certificate (NBC) and National Technical Certificate (NTC) examinations have been released. Examinations will start on Monday 21st September with Theory Papers and end on Thursday 15th October, 2020. There will be NO FREE WEEK between theory and practical examinations. Examination Centres with less than 10 Candidates will be merged with the nearest Centres with adequate Halls and classrooms for quality assurance purposes. NCDC Guidelines on COVID-19 of hand washing, use of alcohol-based sanitizers, face masks and social distancing will be strictly adhered to. The timetable is contained in the attached PDF file below. UNICAL Student Allegedly Commits Suicide after Being Scammed of her School Fees In a sad turn of event, a 100 level student of the Department of History and International Studies at the University of Calabar, reportedly committed suicide after being defrauded of her school fees. The 18-year-old student identified as Veronica Bako Myomuter, an indigene of Kastina-Ala, Benue state committed suicide by ingesting a poisonous substance on Thursday August 6, after being scammed of N100,000 said to be her school fees which she couldn’t pay before the outbreak of Coronavirus. It was gathered that, the deceased invested the money in a ponzi scheme in which she was told she will get double of her investment within minutes. Friends of the deceased have taken to social media to pen down tributes to her.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has published the full timetable for the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). In a post on Twitter, the examination body said it was the ‘Final International Timetable for the Conduct of WASSCE for School Candidates, 2020’. The Nigerian government on its part had approved Monday, August 17 as the start of the exams. It will end Saturday, September 12. A look at the time-table shows students will sit for Mathematics on August 24 and English Language on August 26. Practicals for science students begin this Friday, August 7 with Chemistry.
